Godzilla will return home with a new Japanese movie

Toho announces that the time has come to reclaim Godzilla and bring him home

GodzillaBig news for monster movie fans this morning as it looks like Gojira is returning to Japan.

Blog The Good, The Bad And The Godzilla (via Bloody Disgusting) compiled a series of corroborating reports that Toho Studios are planning to revive the king of the monsters after seeing the outpouring of love on his 60th anniversary.

Toho executive Taiji Ueda said “”With the success of the Hollywood version of Godzilla, we decided on a new [domestic] production. The screenplay is currently in development and we plan to start shooting next summer. We cannot announce cast or staff selections at this time. And we’re still deliberating whether to bring Godzilla to life via CGI or man-in-suit. This resurrection will be the centerpiece for ’16, and this is the force of our words.”

“The passionate voices of the fans clamoured for a resurrection [of the Japanese Godzilla]. We will bring the monster back to Japan, with the same high-quality, by bringing together our collective know-how, which we’ve been striving for [over the last 12 years], so we mustn’t lose to Hollywood,”

While we were big fans of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, this is hugely exciting news. So much of the success of this year’s version was due to the respect it paid to the original creation, so the idea of a Toho response to that is thrilling.
