Galaxy Quest is not only one of the best sci-fi comedies of all time, it’s one of the best sci-fi movies of all time. So it’s hard to suppress a bit of excitement on hearing that Paramount and some of the original creative team behind the movie are working on a TV series based on it.
Variety reports that Paramount, co-writer Robert Gordon, director Dean Parisot and executive producers Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein are shopping a show based on the film to various networks, although no one has snapped it up yet.
The film, which starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman, saw the aging cast of a cult sci-fi TV show recruited by real life aliens to help them fight their evil oppressor. Unfortunately, the aliens have no idea that they’re actors. It’s incredibly well-observed, superbly written and wonderfully performed; it’s pretty much perfect. Oh, and Sam Rockwell as Guy Fleegman is one of cinema’s great performances.
It obviously seems unlikely that any of the original cast will return but we’ll be keeping a very close eye on this one. Never give up, never surrender.
