The first film hasn’t even been released in cinemas yet, but it’s a mark of the level of confidence that Warner Bros has in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them that four sequels are currently planned. Indeed, the creators of the Harry Potter prequels even appear to be having their casts fleshed out already, with none other then Johnny Depp being confirmed for a role in what we’ll tentatively call Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2.
According to a report on Deadline, Depp’s role hasn’t been confirmed yet, although it is hinted that he may well make a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in the first film, setting up his appearance in the second.
Since the Fantastic Beasts films comprise a virtually entirely new cast, it’s pretty hard to speculate on exactly who he was playing, although that hasn’t prevented some fans from attempting to join up what few dots there are. Recently, director David Yates hinted that Gellert Grindelwald – the dark wizard who terrorised the wizarding world before the events of the Harry Potter films – could be involved in future films, so naturally this has led to rumours that he’ll be involved.
For what it’s worth, we reckon it’ll be somebody else entirely, but then what do we know. Our theories are generally way off the mark, so we expect this to be the case again. Whatever happens, Depp will join whoever’s returning out of Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Samantha Morton, Ezra Miller and Colin Farrell for the sequel, which we solemnly hope (and expect) will flesh out the wizarding world even further.
Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them 2 will be released in cinemas on 16 November 2018. For all the latest movie news, pick up the new issue of SciFiNow, in which you can read our full behind-the-scenes feature on the upcoming movie.
