Speaking to BBC Wales, Doctor Who star Matt Smith admitted that losing Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, who play Amy Pond and Rory Williams, hit him pretty hard. The pair leave for (perhaps) the last time in Episode 5, ‘The Angels Take Manhattan’.

“It was terribly sad when they left and I do miss them as we are great chums,” said Smith, “but they go with a bang and a tear. That is what the show is about and onward we go with Jenna [Louise Coleman, the new companion] and she is doing terrifically well.

“Just like in the show we would swap roles off set where sometimes I would be the older brother, or dad, or Arthur would be the dad,” continued Smith. “Lord only knows how much life informed art or art informed life between the three of us, I will never know! It was very sad to see those guys go, but we have five of the best episodes.

“Without sounding too gushy, I adore them both, I really do.”

Doctor Who ‘The Angels Take Manhattan’ is airing 29 September 2012 on BBC One HD. The first half of Doctor Who Series 7 is released 12 November 2012, and is available to pre-order on DVD, priced £17, and Blu-ray, priced £20.99, from Amazon.co.uk.
