The tabloids broke the silence earlier this morning, but official sources have now confirmed that the new companion for Doctor Who Series 7 will be former Emmerdale star Jenna-Louise Coleman.

The actress, who also appeared in ITV’s Titanic, Waterloo Road and briefly in Captain America: The First Avenger, will be replacing the departing Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) and Arthur Darvil (Rory Williams/Pond), who leave in episode 5 of Series 7 – six episodes will be broadcast in 2012, and a further eight in 2013.

“It always feels like a miracle when you find the right person,” said executive producer Steven Moffat in a BBC press conference.

“Who she’s playing, how the Doctor meets her, and even where he finds her, are all part of one of the biggest mysteries the Time Lord ever encounters,” continued Moffat. “Even by the Doctor’s standards, this isn’t your usual boy meets girl.”
