Deadpool animated TV series coming from Donald Glover

Donald Glover is working on a Deadpool animated TV series for FXX to air in 2018

If you thought that the success of Deadpool only meant that we’d be seeing a lot more of him on the big screen, you were wrong.

Variety reports that FXX is working on a Deadpool animated TV series that will be created by Donald Glover and his brother and collaborator Stephen Glover.

There’ll be no awkward pilot period; this is going to straight to series and it will have 10 episodes that will air at some point in 2018. Donald Glover’s brilliant series Atlanta aired last year on FX, and while that show has been delayed due to his commitments playing Lando Calrissian in the Han Solo Star Wars spin-off movie, it sounds like it’s full steam ahead on this as-yet untitled Deadpool project.

Glover and his brother Steven, who is a staff-writer on Atlanta (seriously, watch Atlanta if you haven’t yet) will be “showrunners, executive producers and writers of the series.” FX have had great success with Noah Hawley’s brilliant X-Men-based series Legion (again, if you haven’t watched Legion yet, you absolutely have to), and they’re clearly excited about getting their hands on Wade Wilson.

Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb said “How much more fun could this be? Deadpool, Donald and FX – the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth. We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”

It definitely feels like a good fit. The word “cartoonish” could describe plenty of Wade’s more outlandish exploits and really there’s only so many monsters you can burst out of in live-action, especially as the film team seem reasonably committed to keeping a smaller scope and focusing on the comedy.

So, the question is…will Ryan Reynolds voice Deadpool? Even though there weren’t any direct tie-ins to the X-Men movie universe in Legion, it came very, very close and they’ve been open about wanting Patrick Stewart to play Professor X at some point. Surely it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Reynolds could lend his dulcet tones to this? Also, Atlanta‘s Zazie Beetz is playing Domino in Deadpool 2. How can they not cross over?
