Political correctness gone mad as NBC won’t let John Constantine smoke in the TV show

According to Dog Soldiers and The Descent director Neil Marshall who directed the Constantine pilot, the TV incarnation of DC Comics’ no-good occultist won’t be a smoker.

That’s pretty core character trait considering one of his best-known comic-book arcs – the one that partially inspired 2005’s Constantine sees him scrabbling to defeat lung cancer.

“On network it’s the one thing,” Marshall told Collider. “You can’t smoke on network. That’s one of his character traits. We’re working around that.

“We’re trying to get aspects of it in there as much as possible. We’ll see… the smoking is very frustrating. Who knows where it will go; where the story will go; where the character will go? There’s still lots of options.”

It’s political correctness gone mad, you just couldn’t make it up, etc. Where’s Richard Littlejohn in all of this?
