Constantine TV show casts Zed and completes character swap

NBC’s Constantine has found its new female lead but the pilot won’t be reshot

ANGELICA CELAYANBC’s Constantine has cast Angélica Celaya as its new female lead Zed.

Deadline reports that Celaya, who has appeared in Dallas and Burn Notice, has taken the role of Constantine’s right-hand woman. This completes the leading lady switcheroo, following the news that Lucy Griffiths’ Liv had been dropped.

Executive Producer Daniel Cerone called Zed “a perfect foil” for Constantine with “an interesting dark past…Zed is intuitive, she can detect bullshit, and Constantine is a bullshit artist.”

David S Goyer confirmed that the pilot will not be reshot, and that instead Liv will leave the show. “Characters drop around [Constantine] like flies,” he said, and noted that her leaving is “kind of consistent with the character.”

Whether Liv will walk away or end up dead like so many of Constantine’s acquaintances remains to be seen.

Constantine begins on NBC on 24 October in the US. No UK broadcaster or air date has been announced. You can buy Hellblazer: Original Sins for £11.99 at Amazon.co.uk and find out more about the comics that inspired the show with new digital magazine Uncanny Comics
