Clive Barker’s Hellraiser remake gets an update

Clive Barker teases some plot details from his Hellraiser reboot script

hellraiserA while ago, genre legend Clive Barker confirmed that he was writing a script for a Hellraiser remake, and he’s now confirmed that it’s still moving forward.

Speaking to EW about this history of Nightbreed (definitely read that whole article, btw), Barker revealed that he’s just handed in his second draft, and that it’s not exactly a remake per se.

“I think the phrase is ‘reboot,’ although I’ve never really understood what that meant. I wanted to make sure we sounded some fresh notes. The movie actually begins on Devil’s Island. I wanted to fold into the Hellraiser narrative something about the guy—the Frenchman Lemarchand—who made the mysterious box, which raises Pinhead. I figured, ‘Well, what would have happened to him?’ He might well have been taken to Devil’s Island and I thought that would be a pretty cool place to start the movie.”

So what exactly is the holdup? Well…

“We’re waiting for Bob to come back to us and see when we’re going to actually make the movie.”

The Hellraiser reboot/reimagining/remake has had a troubled history that’s been dragging on for several years now, and has seen Pascal Laugier (Martyrs), Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (Inside) and Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine 3D) take a crack at it before departing the project. Will Barker be the one to finally crack the remake of his own film?

You can buy Hellraiser 1-3 on DVD for £6.99 at Amazon.co.uk. Keep up to date with the latest horror news with the new issue of SciFiNow.
