Fans of Ed Brubaker’s amazing run on Captan America had a feeling when watching Captain America: The First Avenger that we’d be seeing his partner, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) pop up again after he was thrown from the speeding train and into a distant, icy river.
In the comic run, Bucky’s body is found in the Atlantic by a Soviet submarine, his arm torn. It’s replaced by cybernetics, and unbeknown to Cap, the young soldier is re-educated/brainwashed as covert operative The Winter Soldier, broken out of storage every now and again to conduct assassinations, kidnappings and assorted black ops missions on behalf of his Kremlin bosses.
In the present, a rogue Russian general unleashes the mothballed Winter Soldier against his rivals, committing terrorist attacks on US soil and bringing Captain America face to face with his wayward ally.
Comic writer Ed Brubaker rebuffed our queries, saying, “Sorry folks, I know as much as you do about the Cap movie at this point. Although I’m hoping that’ll change soon.”
