Master of the macabre Tim Burton spoke to Yahoo! about the current state of superhero movies and singled out the Marvel Studios canon for criticism.

“How many times can you say ‘you’re wearing a funny costume’ with the tights and stuff?” asked Burton.

“That’s been going on for 20 years now. Yes, we all know that superheroes are damaged individuals. Maybe we need to see a happy superhero?”

It’s easy to flip that back on the man who invented the modern superhero with the “damaged individuals” of 1989’s Batman and 1991’s Batman Returns. Basically, Penguin says it so we don’t have to.

“I remember Batman getting so much flak and criticism at the time for being too dark and now 20-30 years later, it now looks like a light-hearted romp. It’s such a strange thing to go through.”

We’re guessing he hasn’t seen Guardians Of The Galaxy then…
