Speaking to the newspaper, the actor/director had the following to say: “[Marvel’s plan is] to team up the heroes for The Avengers, which is made up of all of the Marvel heroes they have the rights to.” This much was known already from previous announcements made by the studio on their production schedule for the next four years. However, Favreau goes further, stating that, “The ones Marvel is talking about now are Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and Iron Man. I would love to see that.”

The original Avengers was created as a response to The Hulk going on a rampage, with Thor, Ant Man, The Wasp and Iron Man teaming up to stop Loki, the source behind the attacks. Captain America later joined after he was thawed out.

The Avengers movie is slated for a 2012 release. No director has yet been attached, although it is widely believed that Robert Downey Jr and Edward Norton will reprise their roles as Tony Stark Jr and Bruce Banner respectively.
