Arrow Season 1: Why cast Farscape and Torchwood stars

Arrow’s Andrew Kreisberg on casting Ben Browder, John Barrowman and Seth Gabel

John Barrowman as Malcolm Merlyn in Arrow Season 1

We’re half-way into the Arrow Season 1, but already there’s a host of familiar faces to get the geeks salivating – aside from the regular cast comprised of The Vampire Diaries‘ Stephen Amell and Torchwood‘s John Barrowman, we have guest stars like Farscape and Stargate SG-1‘s Ben Browder and Fringe‘s Seth Gabel.

According to co-creator and executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, though, this isn’t a contrived effort to get geeks on side – this is pure love.

“A lot of that is just done for us,” Kreisberg told SciFiNow. “I love Farscape, so I got to work with Ben Browder. I love Doctor Who and Torchwood, so I got to work with John Barrowman. [Executive producer] Greg Berlanti worked with Seth years ago on Dirty Sexy Money, so when the character the Count came up he was actually Greg’s first choice and he’s proven to be fantastic.

“A lot times, more than anything, it’s fandom on our part. It sort of goes along with our philosophy about this show – we care very much about what the audience likes and what they don’t like, what will excite them, but we always start with ‘what’s exciting us?’. This is the kind of show that we would all be hyper fans of… if we weren’t making it! A lot of times it’s ‘Hey, wouldn’t it be so cool if that person were on?’ so as long as we’re making ourselves happy, we hope that the audience will be as equally as enthusiastic.”

Arrow will return to Sky 1 in late January 2013.
