Amityville: The Awakening release date delay explained

Why did the Weinsteins push Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville horror back?

Amityville 2014Last week we heard that the new Amityville movie had been delayed by the Weinsteins, as the Franck Khalfoun-directed movie starring Jennifer Jason Leigh was removed from its release date.

Now, Bloody Disgusting (who’ve been on the money with every Amityville scoop) say they have the answer. According to the site, test screenings revealed that the ending needed reshoots including additional VFX. Nothing massively out of the ordinary there, but star Cameron Monaghan had already started shooting the new season of Shameless and his schedule was now a problem.

The site does also note that the reaction to the film at its two screenings was “overwhelemingly positive” which is certainly encouraging. Their sources estimate a return to filming in November for a Summer or Autumn 2015 release.

While the delay is disappointing, it’s always reassuring to see the reasoning behind it. Fingers crossed that Amityville: The Awakening is worth the wait.

Belle, her little sister, and her comatose twin brother move into a new house with their single mother Joan in order to save money to help pay for her brother’s expensive healthcare. But when strange phenomena begin to occur in the house including the miraculous recovery of her brother, Belle begins to suspect her Mother isn’t telling her everything and soon realizes they just moved into the infamous Amityville house.”
