According to Variety, The Descendants‘ Shailene Woodley is currently in talks to play Mary Jane Watson, Spider-Man’s future love interest, in the second of director Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man movies.
If the films follow the comic-book arc, expect Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy to be killed by the Green Goblin and Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker to find solace in Mary Jane’s arms. But for that to happen they’d need a Norman Osborne.
Oh, they’re casting Harry Osborn too are they? Dun-dun-DUNNNN.
As an aside, casting these characters brings them a whole lot closer to the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy – where Mary Jane Watson was memorably played by Kirsten Dunst and Norman Osborne by James Franco – but given Amazing Spider-Man won over geek hearts and minds everywhere and silenced that whole “too soon for a reboot” thing, odds are nobody will bat an eyelid.
