Curzon Midnight Movies will host a special screening of Metropolis at its Curzon Mayfair branch tomorrow, in London. The film, which has apparently been “reconstructed and restored” for the event, will show for one night only.
Tickets are priced at £8.50 in advance or £10.50 on the door, with a party starting at 9.00pm. The doors for the film will open at 10.45pm, and the dress code is, according to the mailout from the company, “Twenties bourgoisie or factory chic”.
Metropolis, from director Fritz Lang, is regarded as a seminal film in science fiction, possibly the most important to have been released in the genre’s history. It deals heavily with ideas of class division, and features an early form of artificial intelligence. Cut substantially after its original premiere, a version of the film with an extra 30 minutes was discovered recently, and aired in Germany.

I’ve criminally yet to see this… Is there a special edition version on DVD worth picking up?
There’s a DVD and BluRay due to be released later this year which is the newly restored complete version of the film that’s being shown.
It’s also worth tracking down the colourised version with a Giorgio Moroder soundtrack, though some people see this as sacrilege.
