Divergent stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James have read ahead to the shocking ending of Allegiant, book 3 of Veronica Roth’s series. While some fans couldn’t believe that the main protagonist Tris Prior (Woodley) died in a feat of self-sacrifice, the actors kinda saw it coming…

Speaking exclusively to SciFiNow, Theo James says: “The whole concept of selflessness runs through the entire series so the most natural way for her story to end seemed to be self-sacrifice. And there’s this whole crossover with the big Jesus, which you see a little bit with this sense of Abnegation and giving yourself for the greater good,” he continues. “I thought it was the most natural ending.”

But what about Shailene Woodley?

“She liked it in a way,” he tells us. “Again it felt natural to her in terms of the story arc of the character. In the second book [Insurgent] she’s constantly sacrificing herself to the point where my character [Four] is getting deeply frustrated by it and says, ‘Do you not have any value for your own life, or the people that care for you?’ and she says ‘It’s not about that.’ But if it’s going that way in the second book you feel that it’s probably gonna end up that way.”

There’s currently plans to adapt all 3 books, with the sequels coming out in March 2015 and 2016. The quick turnaround means that Divergent director Neil Burger won’t be able to helm the sequel, Insurgent, so the search is on. Meanwhile, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has been hired to rewrite the sequel’s script. He has plenty of experience adapting novels for the big screen, having worked on The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, as well as co-writing Cinderella Man, I Am Legend, and I, Robot.

Divergent is released on 21 March 2014. You can buy Divergent in paperback for £5.59 at Amazon.co.uk.
