Sony Pictures have made no secret of their desire to created a Marvel Studios-style expanded universe, but now they’ve officially confirmed Sinister Six and Venom spin-off films to be released alongside The Amazing Spider-Man 3 in a press release.

Sinister Six, which is based around Spider-Man’s classic villains – perhaps including Vulture, Electro and Doctor Octopus, which are all appearing in some form or another in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – will be written by Buffy The Vampire Slayer and The Cabin In The WoodsDrew Goddard, with an eye to directing.

Venom, which is based upon one of Spider-Man’s fan-favourite supervillains since reinvented as an antihero, will be developed by Star Trek Into Darkness and Amazing Spider-Man 2 writing team Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci along with Men In Black‘s Ed Soloman.

Given Goddard’s natural chops for balancing comedy and drama, perhaps the Sinister Six film would be a bit of an underdog heist picture against an even bigger bad – OsCorp for example. It could definitely serve to take a few nods from the luckless team of C-listers and losers depicted in Nick Spencer and Steve Lieber’s ongoing Superior Foes Of Spider-Man comic.

Venom meanwhile lends himself perfectly to the sort of antihero that hasn’t been effectively touched upon since the Dark Knight series ended. With the conflict between host and alien symbiote cribbed from the classic Nineties arc where host Eddie Brock tried to walk the path of the angels, or the more recent take on the character where Flash Thompson uses a weaponised Venom symbiote he’s supposedly in total control over to work as a special agent for the US government..

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due 2 May 2014, while The Amazing Spider-Man is out now. Order it now on DVD for £10 and Blu-ray for £14.99 from Amazon.co.uk. Thwip thwip.
