According to The Wrap, Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal revealed to investors that the company plans to make the most out of its ownership of The Amazing Spider-Man, creating a Marvel Phase 1-style universe out of the characters their license has left them open to.

“We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains,” said Pascal.

As one of Marvel’s landmark books, quite a lot of important characters first debuted in Amazing Spider-Man‘s pages so it might look as though Sony have the world to choose from.

However, it’s obviously a lot more complex than that, otherwise the rights to the Punisher (who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #129) wouldn’t have been sold separately and the Kingpin of Crime (who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #50) wouldn’t have appeared in Daredevil.

Sticking close to the Spidey brand, fan-favourite characters who cry out for a spin-off are surely Flash Thompson’s villain-turned-hero Venom, Kaine’s reluctant hero Scarlet Spider, sultry sneak thief Black Cat, and the ass-kicking Spider-Girl and Arachne, because goddammit, we’re in dire need of a decent female superhero on our screens.

Sure, it’s a bit spider-variant heavy, but it will at least enable us to get different styles of storytelling and as a bonus retain some power iconography – all their logos and looks aren’t exactly incompatible…

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is due 2 May 2014, while The Amazing Spider-Man is out now. Order it now on DVD for £10 and Blu-ray for £14.99 from Amazon.co.uk. Thwip thwip.
