Following the less than glorious release of The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader in 2010, CS Lewis’ much-loved Christian fantasy series looked to have fallen victim to the studio system’s demands for a new Harry Potter.
Now the series is back on, with the fourth book, The Silver Chair, being primed for adapatation by producer Mark Gordon (Source Code, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen). CS Lewis’ stepson Douglas Gresham – who will act as producer on the film – confirmed in a statement, “I have a great deal of respect for Mark Gordon’s work and am confident that together we can bring the beauty and magical delight that Narnia engenders in the hearts of those who read the books to the screen in The Silver Chair.
“I am very much looking forward to diving once more into Narnia, this time with Mark Gordon and his team.”
Gordon himself added, ““Like many readers, both young and old, I am a huge fan of CS Lewis’ beautiful and allegorical world of Narnia. These fantasy stories inspire real-world passion among millions of devoted fans around the world. As we prepare to bring the next book to life, we are humbled and excited to contribute to the outstanding legacy of Narnia.”
The fourth book is the first one to not feature any of the original Pevensie children, instead centring on Voyage Of The Dawn Treader‘s Eustace Scrubb who was played by Will Poulter. Even Prince Caspian, now King, is an old man, removing the need for swarthy Ben Barnes and his wandering accent.
This could an excellent opportunity to recast the holdover characters and move the series forward, maybe even make some much-needed changes to the narrative.
