James Wan is finished with the horror genre

Director of Saw, The Conjuring and Insidious says he’s made his last horror film

conjuringJames Wan, director of The Conjuring and the upcoming Insidious: Chapter 2, has announced that he is “finished with the horror genre.”

Speaking to Moviefone, Wan explained that “I spent the last ten years of my life doing this. It’s time for a change, for goodness sake! Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you’re know as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I’m a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films.”

Wan broke onto the horror scene with Saw back in 2004 but chose not to return for a second film. “I never did any of the Saw sequels, because I felt that, the story that I wanted to tell with the Saw film, I’d already told it and I didn’t want to repeat myself. Whereas, I did Insidious: Chapter 2 because I felt I never finished that story. In a lot of ways, I see the two films as one big movie. When I made the first one, it was like “Oh, I ran out of money and I’ll just finish it here.’ And then that became Insidious 1 and then I was like, ‘Okay, I’ll get the checks and then finish the rest.'”

Wan has signed on to direct Fast & Furious 7, but this annoucement confirms that he’s leaving the horror genre behind, at least for the forseeable future.

Insidious: Chapter 2 is released 13 September and you can read our review here. You can buy Saw for £3.83 at Amazon.co.uk.
