Doctor Who Series 7 Part 2 will start with a bang, according to Steven Moffat, Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman.

Speaking at a preview screening for ‘The Bells Of St John’, Moffat told us: “What we’ve got in effect this year is three opening episodes because the next two are fast-paced nail-biters as well. So normally we have one big super-fast mad one at the beginning and settle down, it’s like we don’t settle down for ages in this one. It’s like having three episode 1’s in a row.”

“We’ve got Liam Cunningham, who is a personal favourite actor of mine, we’ve got a submarine, we’ve got the Ice Warriors,” revealed Matt Smith. “We’ve got the Cybermen back in a new guise, we’ve got Neil Gaiman writing the script, we’ve got Diana Rigg playing an old hag, brilliantly with great charm and sexiness and grace, and her daughter who is also brilliant, and that’s a Mark Gatiss script which is full of fanboy love.”

Smith and Coleman also teased a monster that we haven’t seen before. “Towards the end of the season, I don’t want to give too much away, but we might have one of those clever Moffat creations, one of the new classic monsters,” Smith told us. “And they’ve got a great name and they look so brilliant.”

“They are absolutely brilliant,” agreed Coleman. “They don’t chase you, they just come at you slowly, and they’ve got a style, which I find really quite terrifying, they’ve got a style to them.”

We’ll also see the Doctor in a slightly updated outfit, with a spiffy purple tweed coat.

“[The coat] is still tweed, I always wanted something purple, but perhaps it would have been too bold in season 1,” Smith explained. “If you look back at the interviews I’ve done, I always said that I thought the costume would sort of continually evolve. And it was one of those things with the Ponds leaving and the Doctor’s mentality changing slightly, and the new title sequence and a new beginnning for a new era, we thought ‘Why not give the Doctor a little revamp?’ And I think it really works.”

“And the Doctor’s greatest secret will be revealed,” concluded Moffat. “And it actually will. I’m not lying. Unless I am lying and I’m lying when I said that. I’m not.”

Doctor Who returns with “The Bells of Saint John” on 30 March 2013. You can read our spoiler-free preview of the episode here.
