Pioneering British make-up artist Stuart Freeborn has died, he was aged 98.

Best known for his work on the original Star Wars trilogy, for which he created the look of Chewbacca, Yoda, and Jabba the Hutt, Stuart Freeborn crafted make-up and prosthetics for such classics as The Bridge Over The River Kwai, Oliver Twist, The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp, and most importantly for genre fans, Stanley Kubrick’s Doctor Strangelove and 2001: An Space Odyssey, as well all Superman movies from 1978’s Superman to 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest For Peace.

Star Wars creator George Lucas told the BBC, “He brought with him not only decades of experience, but boundless creative energy. His artistry and craftsmanship will live on forever in the characters he created.

“His Star Wars creatures may be reinterpreted in new forms by new generations, but at their heart, they continue to be what Stuart created for the original films.”
