One of the most talked-about horror films to have made the festival rounds over the past twelve months and with good reason. Starring Ginger Snaps‘ Katharine Isabelle as a broke medical student who finds herself putting her skills to good to use in the body modification community, American Mary is an unsettling, razor sharp, and darkly funny film that not only helps to restore the good name of surgical horror in the wake of countless Hostel knock-offs but also boasts a very strong and complex female lead.
Basically, it’s an excellent independent horror that you should make sure you see on the big screen if you can. The film will be presented live and in person by the amazing Soska sisters as well as Katharine Isabelle. If their appearance at FrightFest was anything to go by (anecdotes about skin-farting, anyone?), this will be worth the price of admission alone.
Starting in London at the Prince Charles Cinema on Friday 11 January 2013, it plays on successive nights at the Edinburgh Filmhouse, the Glasgow Film Theatre, the Sheffield Showroom, the Hyde Park Picture House, the Bristol Watershed and the Duke of Yorks in Brighton. If you live in or near one of these cities, we urge you to go.
Tickets are on sale via the FrightFest website. You can also pre-order American Mary on Blu-ray from Amazon.co.uk for ÂŁ11.20.
