Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth director Guillermo del Toro has announced that his series of vampire books, The Strain, co-written with Chuck Hogan, have been picked up by FX with Lost‘s Carlton Cuse as executive producer.
The pilot will be directed, executive produced and co-written by Guillermo del Toro – perhaps to set the tone, like Martin Scorsese on Boardwalk Empire – while Chuck Hogan will be co-writing the rest of the series.
“FX made the most sense, based on the level of commitment, passion and understanding of the concept of the book,” explained del Toro to Deadline. “They got behind the idea of making this a close-ended series; we wanted to follow the books closely and so it couldn’t be open-ended, but rather three to five seasons max.”
Del Toro hopes the first book, The Strain, can make up Season 1, second book The Fall Season 2 and third book The Night Eternal can make up Season 3 and 4. He hopes to start shooting the pilot September 2013 after Pacific Rim has come out, and FX have ordered additional scripts, as they did with American Horror Story to allow them to go straight into production on the series if they like the look of the pilot.
