Indiana Jones 5 in peril as George Lucas retires

Star Wars helmsman George Lucas to retire from blockbusters, but what does this mean for Indiana Jones 5?

Indiana Jones 5

Indiana Jones 5This winter’s Red Tails, a World War II flick about the first black pilots, will be the last big budget big screen outing for George Lucas – the man responsible for Indiana Jones and Star Wars.

Lucas said in an interview with the New York Times, “I’m retiring… I’m moving away from the business, from the company, from all this kind of stuff.”

His longterm collaborator and producer Rick McCallum added, “he’s done everything he’s ever wanted to do… He will have completed his task as a man and a filmmaker.”

While George Lucas plans to focus on the low-budget fare that began his career (as well as doubtless planning the edits to Star Wars in time for the 2016 edition that’s beamed directly into your brain), what will this mean for the proposed fifth Indiana Jones film?

Having written the story for every Indy movie, as well as the videogames and the brilliant Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV series, it’s difficult to imagine another outing for Harrison Ford’s grizzled archeologist without Lucas’ involvement.

Having previously announced he was fine-tuning the story to Indiana Jones 5 does this mean the whole thing is off?

Lucas was careful to ring-fence his involvement in movie, but there’s no real evidence of his commitment either way at this point. After all, it’s not like that could be anything but a big budget blockbuster, even post-Shia LaBeouf’s tree-top monkey race.
