When it was announced that Captain America‘s third MCU instalment would be based on Civil War, one particular moment of the character’s graphic novel career came to mind for many fans: the death of Captain America.
Sure, the films have a track record of steering away from comic story lines, but maybe – just maybe – Captain America: Civil War would be the film that finally killed off an Avenger. With no more Cap projects (bar possibly Infinity War Parts 1 and 2) on the cards for Marvel, it seemed not only possible but likely. The thought also crossed the mind of Steve Rogers actor Chris Evans.
“You think that a lot in the Marvel Universe unfortunately, but I was pretty happy because you just knew it was going to be a good project,” Evans tells us.
“You knew it was going to come together in a good way, and Marvel seems to have that winning recipe down, so to try and get all these actors in one movie, regardless of whether you die or not… What you really want to do is be a part of good films. Trying to tackle a project of this scope, you knew it was going to be something special. I’ll take one for the team!”
So is Steve Rogers going to be flying the American flag for the Avengers forever, or will death eventually catch up with him?
“It’s going to happen at some point,” says Evans. “I’m not going to play this guy forever, so it’s inevitable. You hope the character will keep going. It’s the type of thing where there will be many incarnations of the character. It’s quite James Bond-y. But you’re just lucky to be part of any chapter.”
