Soylent Green
Year: 1973
Director: Richard Fleischer
Cast: Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors
In spite of the comparatively creaky thrills that are offered up by Richard Fleischer’s dystopian future society crushed by the sheer size of its population, its ending has gone on to attain celebrity status. The murder of an executive at the company that manufactures the artifi cial titular food, Soylent Green, upon which the entire population of the world depends leads Charlton Heston to discover some truly distasteful revelations. This is an excellent example of the power of a twist to make a fi lm live long in the memory, and if you’re lucky enough to have avoided any spoilers up until now then who are we to ruin it for you.
