The Matrix
Year: 1999
Director: Andy and Larry Wachowski
Cast: Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne
There is a credible argument for The Matrix’s greatest twist being the fact that its two sequels were so uninspired. Even after two hours of sustained brilliance the Wachowski’s still managed to rustle up an exhilarating climax and this surely marks it for greatness. After convincing us that Neo is headed for a noble death, the Wachowski’s rebirth of Neo as The One has the power to lift you off your seat. That said, had Neo died the fi lm still would have been brilliant, and we would have been spared its ill-conceived follow-ups.
