Planet Of The Apes
Year: 1968
Director: Franklin J Schaffner
Cast: Charlton Heston, Roddy MacDowall, Kim Hunter
Star Wars die-hards will disagree, but the Statue Of Liberty denouement to Planet Of The Apes is more famous, revered, lampooned, and yes, more iconic than Empire. You already know that there’s more to Vader, but when Planet Of The Apes pulls the rug out, you hadn’t noticed you were standing on one. It’s a brilliantly conceived sucker-punch, a gloriously unnecessary touch that enhances every moment of the fi lm that has preceded it. If you were looking for a description of what the perfect twist ending should do, that wouldn’t be a bad start.
