Captain Jean-Luc Picard
STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION
Year: 1987
Creator: Gene Roddenberry
Played by: Patrick Stewart
We had a tough time picking Kirk over Picard, but sheer iconography won out in the end. In Picard’s favour, though, he’s articulate, more relevant and he’s more believable. He’s faced his share of troubled times, as all heroes do, and being assimilated by the Borg was certainly a turning point for the fl awed character.
He’d always go to great lengths to protect his crew (‘The Measure Of A Man’), or assist in peacekeeping (‘The Vengeance Factor’) but his most engaging aspect is himself. A troubled past haunts Picard, and his relatable experiences of bullying and failure are key to his character’s heroic qualities.
