Novel Adaptations
Some say that there are no new good ideas, a supposition done no harm by this top ten chart. SciFiNow lists its favourite book-to-screen sci-fi adaptations.

The War Of The Worlds
Year: 1953
Director: Byron Haskin
Cast: Gene Barry, Ann Robinson, Les Tremayne
Adapted from: The War Of The Worlds by H G Wells (novella, 1898)

Like The Time Machine, there are few differences between the film and the novella. The greatest difference, as with all War Of The Worlds adaptations, is that the setting was changed, in this case from London to California. Wells’ commentary on England’s class struggle was removed from the film in favour of a religious subtext – the Martians only begin to die once they’ve attacked a church.
