Although it was adapted over 60 years after the original novelette was fi rst published, there were surprisingly few changes made to the Time Machine story. The greatest difference is that the division between the upper class Eloi and the degenerate Morlocks of earth’s future society, is explained by the effects of nuclear war. An explanation is never offered in Wells’ original story but, considering the time in which the fi lm was made, the addition is understandable.
