Although both the original French novel and the Hollywood film follow the same basic plot, there are a number of rather noticeable differences. The biggest of these is that the ape society was changed from a civilised, technologically advanced one to the comparatively primitive one that we witness in the film. Although only implemented for budgetary reasons the change did allow for the film’s spectacular Statue of Liberty revelation, a twist that is much more subdued in the book.
