Novel Adaptations
Some say that there are no new good ideas, a supposition done no harm by this top ten chart. SciFiNow lists its favourite book-to-screen sci-fi adaptations.

Total Recall
Year: 1990
Director: Paul Verhoeven
Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside
Adapted from: We Can Remember It For You Wholesale by Philip K Dick (novelette published in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, 1966)

Despite starring the least subtle of Hollywood’s superstars, Total Recall is every bit the masterful adaptation as Dick’s other work, Blade Runner. And although Quaid was originally called Quail and never actually visited Mars, Verhoeven still captured the spirit of the novelette. Dealing with familiar themes of identity, memory and social hierarchy, Total Recall stays true to Dick’s original vision, albeit with the added bonus of Arnie’s cheesy one-liners. “Consider that a divorce!” and so on.
