Blade Runner
Year: 1982
Director: Ridley Scott
Cast: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Edward James Olmos
Scott’s sci-fi opus was turned on its head with the director’s cut, which implied that Deckard too was a replicant, but it is the rooftop conclusion to the geordie helmer’s hypnotic film which provides the most iconic images. Shorn of the rural escape that Deckard and Rachael make in the theatrical release, which itself was pieced together with discarded footage from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the battle between Deckard and Batty is bruising and yet philosophical. What is life? What does it mean to die? Batty’s melancholic final words provide a poetic resolution to a most individual of films.
