Metropolis
Year: 1927
Director: Fritz Lang
Cast: Alfred Abel, Brigitte Helm, Heinrich George
Fritz Lang’s masterpiece is as influential a movie as you can get, boasting breathtaking visuals and stunning production design, but it is the worryingly prescient message with which Lang saddles his film that ensures its eternal appeal. After the political implications of the toiling underground workers rebellion against the privileged thinkers and planners who live high above, the final dialogue reveals a surprisingly heartfelt message: “Between the plans of the mind and the tools of the hand there must exist a mediator, and this is the heart.” Profoundly moving.
