The military force of Sparta, one of the leading city-states of ancient Greece, the Spartan Army was depicted in all its oily-glory in Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300, which was recently bought to the screen by director Zack Snyder. Based on the Battle of Thermopylae we see King Leonidas take his personal fighting force of 300 Spartans to certain death against a Persian army of over a million men. Where any normal soldier would have packed up his bindle and headed for the hills, these men showed extraordinary valour, great sacrifice and chiselled six-packs that would make the likes of Peter Andre fall to his knees and weep with envy. They are one of the toughest, obedient and most disciplined armies in history and are prepared to fight no matter what the odds, which automatically guarantees them a place on our list.
