Lex confronts Lionel over the Traveler and the death of the Queens and the Teagues. Lex says that it was no accident he was in Smallville the day of the meteor shower. Chloe is trying to track Brainiac through worldwide radar and power systems, but finds no trace of him or Kara. Clark sneaks into Lionel's office and opens the vault. Inside he sees a copy of Nietzsche's //Beyond Good And Evil and a container behind it with Kryptonian symbols saying it's for Kal-El. Opening it, Clark finds a message saying that Lionel dedicated himself to protecting Clark but he can do so no longer. There are two locks with a key, and the keys used together unlock the secret of controlling Clark. Lionel's message says that Clark must save himself and find the keys.
Lex is plagued by visions of himself as a child, who tries to appeal to his conscience and stop him using the keys. Infuriated by the visions, Lex drags the imaginary child into the fireplace, killing him.
Jimmy finds proof that Lionel was murdered. Gina, Lex's assistant, shoots Lois in the shoulder and locks up Lois and Jimmy so she can destroy the evidence. Meanwhile Chloe finds a key hidden in her drawer, put there by Lionel; Lex finds it and fires her. He now has both keys. Later, Lex is the only one at Lionel's funeral.
