When Ned was a boy, he dreamed of his mother coming back and came up with a way to bring back at least some small part of her. He snuck out to the kitchen and made his first pie and, comforted by the scent, went on to become the Pie Maker.
Emerson is in his office when he receives a call from the mother of Anita Gray, who was a student of olfactory scientist Napoleon LeNez. Napoleon was working on using smells to unleash memories and helped her to remember her grandmother. Together they created a self-help guide, //‘The Smell Of Success’, but Anita was killed by a mysterious explosion while reading the book. Chuck, Emerson, and Ned go to the morgue to revive Anita’s corpse, and she reveals that she sniffed a scratch-'n’-sniff patch when the book exploded. Ned suspects that someone was trying to kill LeNez, so the trio go to see him and conclude that the murder has something to do with the book's release. When they return to the Pie Hole they find a warning note saying to get off the case. LeNez says the note must have come from a man called Oscar Vibenius – the two of them were partners until they broke up over their odour theories. They believe Oscar is trying to stop the publication of book, but their suspicions prove incorrect when they realise LeNez has staged an attempt on his life in order to get publicity. LeNez reveals that Anita’s death was an accident – he rigged the book to explode but didn’t intend her to secretly sniff it.
