Beth’s boyfriend, Josh, is prosecuting powerful arms dealer Amir Fayed for murder, but because of a leak in his department, Josh’s star witness, Leni Hayes, is in serious danger.
Fayed’s hit man raids the safe house where Leni has been hiding and unleashes a hail of bullets on the cops assigned to protect her. Leni manages to escape through a window, cutting her hand on the glass as she does so, and flees to the desert.
Josh enlists Mick to locate the witness and protect her from Fayed. Mick uses the scent from her blood to track her and finds her just before the hit man arrives. As Mick and Leni escape in a car, a helicopter shoots at them and they have no choice but to bail out in the middle of the desert. The blazing sunlight starts to take its toll on Mick and the pregnant Leni, but just before he loses control and feeds on her to stay alive, they find an abandoned motel where they can take shade. As Mick lies dying in a bathtub full of ice, Leni is able to call for help and Beth rushes to their aid. Realising that Mick has had prolonged exposure to sunlight and is near death, Beth allows him to feed off her just long enough to restore his life force.
The hit man shows up once more, but Mick is back to strength and dispatches him with ease. Meanwhile Josh discovers that the leak in his department is a DA friend; Leni agrees to testify and Fayed is convicted. Mick realises that he feels a connection to Beth, but decides it puts her in danger and has to stop.
