First, we’ll set the scene. Mick is a vampire, but not a villain. He drinks blood but only from a morgue. He’s also a private investigator. It’s a bit like Angel (well, a lot like it in some cases) only without the demons. The first episode involves a murder of a young student, Kelly, who has apparently died at the hands of a vampire. Mick, however, is convinced that it’s merely someone pretending to be a vampire, as he can’t smell a vampire on the victim (oh yeah, Mick’s nose is so strong he can smell the past). Also on the case is an internet reporter, Beth (gone are the days, it seems, when cops solved homicides). The two bump into each other again at Kelly’s apartment. Here they find all sorts of vampire memorabilia, including a necklace with blood in its vial. This is subsequently pilfered by Mick.

The next time Beth and Mick meet is at Kelly’s funeral where Christian Ellis, one of Kelly’s professors, is giving a eulogy. He’s surrounded by female goths. A non-goth, Chloe, however, charges out from the crowd slashing his neck. Mick recognises the smell – it’s the same blood that’s in the vial. Beth soon finds out from Chloe that Ellis heads a vampire study group in which her and Kelly were involved. Meanwhile, Mick ends up confronting Ellis who tells our vampiric PI that he’s a vampire looking to balance his life force.

To continue her investigation, Beth goes undercover. She’s soon rumbled, however, and drugged by Ellis’s dastardly assistant. As it transpires, he’s the one who committed the murders. Arriving in the nick of time, however, is Mick, who beats everyone up and saves the day. Ensuring everyone tunes in next time are some flashbacks that reveal Mick’s ex-wife, also a vampire, once kidnapped Beth. Mick rescued Beth and the reporter is only now starting to realise who Mick might be, but for the life of her she can’t figure it out.
