Hawkins is fi nally confronted about
his real identity. After Jimmy hears the
radio broadcast he reveals his fears
about Hawkins to Jake. They force their
way into Hawkins’ house and discover
a range of fake IDs. When Hawkins
returns Jake captures him at gunpoint.
With no choice Hawkins tells his life
story, answering via fl ashback many
of the questions about who he is, who
he works for and who is behind the
nuclear attack. He tells Jake that he is
a member of a CIA team put together
after a shipment of 25 Russian nuclear
warheads was stolen. He claims the
warheads were adapted into nuclear
bombs by extremists whose only
shared aim was overthrowing the US
government. He says he was persuaded
out of retirement and left his family
to work undercover, in what appear
to be off the books operations, going
into prisons to infi ltrate the group. He
succeeds by showing he can provide
fake IDs and is forced to murder a man
who he believes is an informant, giving
him further credibility but leaving him in
a moral quandary.

He is then shown reporting back
to the CIA that he believes he is close
enough to the truth that he could secure
half of the missing bombs. However, it
then emerges that Sarah Mason was
working with him on the case and that
she argued no action should be taken
until they can secure all of the warheads.
But the terrorists discover they’ve
been infi ltrated and bring forward their
plans for attack. Hawkins says that he
could contact the CIA with the licence
plates of some of the vehicles carrying
bombs and it is this, he claims, that
saved NYC. Jake is convinced of the
story’s truth when Hawkins shows him
a Department Of Defense map. It shows
that Jericho was the meeting point for
his task force if they did not prevent the
attacks because the town had the ideal
conditions for survival. Jake is fi nally
convinced of the truth when Hawkins
shows him the bomb that had been
intended to destroy Columbus, which
he has buried. Hawkins realises that the
head of his CIA team, Thomas Valente, is
the man who tried to buy the bomb from
him in previous episode. He is shown
with Sarah suggesting both that she
was in on the attack and that the bombs
were the acts of double agents.
