Once a year on Mongo’s Honour Day (when the three moons align), people show respect for those who died during The Sorrow. The Sorrow was a project in which two small artificial moons were built to harvest the larger one, but the project led to a catastrophe and many people died. The Honour Day ceremony requires Ming and Aura to lead the people in a ritual procession, during which people dance behind them. The Verden also make a pilgrimage to The Sorrow burial grounds.
Baylin returns to Mongo to take part in the Honour Day ceremony, accompanied by Flash and Dale. Arriving at the burial grounds, they find the Guardians of the Dead have been killed, their throats slit, and the seal on the tomb has been broken. They enter the tomb and Baylin is shot with an arrow by someone claiming to be a Guardian who thought they were the thieves returning. But when the thieves do return, they already have the Guardian with them.
In Nascent City, Aura has her eye on one of the procession’s dancers. She meets him at a tavern where he is staging a satire with marionettes of Ming and Rankol. But Ming had followed Aura and is enraged by the puppetry and has the dancer killed. Aura is devastated.
Ming orders the Rankol to attack the Verden, and the pilgrimage never make it to the burial grounds. Flash, Dale and a wounded Baylin are on their own against the thieves, trapped inside the tomb. Flash causes a cave-in, and Baylin is deeply concerned about the missing Verden pilgrims.
