Zarkov has been mapping the points where access between Earth and Mongo is the least dangerous but, when he opens a rift with Flash, they’re forced to jump through it to prevent a postman from getting wise. On Mongo, they see Vultan’s Dactyl lieutenant, Garus, being chased by people painted blue and wielding spears and shields – the Zurn. The Zurn capture Garus and take him to their temple but Flash and Zarkov manage to free him.
Azura, leader of the Zurn, claims that the Dactyls raided their source-water convoy in order to start a war. Vultan insists that his people are not thieves and had nothing to do with the raid. Sensing a setup, Flash tracks down Borak, Baylin’s clothes-merchant friend, who reveals he recently sold Dactyl clothing to a shifty-looking man.
At Nascent City, Ming calls a peace summit between Vultan and Azura, and Flash dons a disguise to enter Ming’s stronghold undetected. With no proof of the Dactyl raid either way, Ming reluctantly accepts the war until Flash arrives with the merchant who sold the Dactyl clothing. Azura and Vultan both vow peace, but as soon as they leave Nascent City, the Zurn attack Vultan’s forces. Garus is one of the few survivors of the massacre, and Zarkov is taken prisoner.
Flash and Vultan create an illusion using a rift generator to trick the Zurn into thinking Flash is a god. He demands Zarkov as a ‘sacrifice’ and they go through the rift back to Earth. Meanwhile Joe confides in his captain about Mongo, but when Dale refuses to corroborate his story, Joe is forced to turn in his badge and gun.
