Ellie is hoping to get her brother Chuck back in the dating game. Ellie's boyfriend introduces Chuck to a cute girl, who remembers his best friend from Stanford, Bryce Larkin. Unbeknown to Chuck, Bryce has gone on to become a rogue CIA agent, currently in the midst of stealing national security secrets encoded in digital images. As he is chased and shot, Bryce emails the encoded security secrets to Chuck. Chuck reads the email and becomes mesmerised by the coded information.
Chuck and best friend Morgan head to work at Buy More electronics store, where Chuck fixes computers. He meets a gorgeous girl called Sarah, but she is actually a CIA agent and is after his computer – she later breaks into his house to steal it, but the computer is destroyed in the struggle to get away. Sarah's boss warns her that she has 12 hours to ensure there's no other copy of the email before NSA hitman Casey arrives to take care of Chuck.
Sarah and Chuck go out on a date, but Casey shows up. Sarah saves Chuck and explains that the NSA is after him. Chuck has flashes of images from the encoded email that a bomb is set to go off. He leads Sarah and Casey to the bomb and uses a computer virus to diffuse it. Sarah and Casey argue over who gets Chuck – they agree to let him carry on with his life as usual, but will stick around to protect him. Casey gets a job at Buy More and the next time Chuck sees Sarah, he has a vision of her killing lots of people.
