Favourite sci-fi film... of all time!!!

Hey guys,

SciFiNow is offering all website visitors, magazine readers and forum to assist in a debate. We need you to help answer that perennial question, the one that has plagued genre fans for decades: what is the best sci-fi film… ever?

To make things a little easier we want you to write down your ten favourite movies specifically in the sci-fi genre. There will be a point system in place, which is as follows...

1st favourite = 10 points
2nd favourite = 9 points
3rd favourite = 8 points
4th favourite = 7 points
5th favourite = 6 points
6th favourite = 5 points
7th favourite = 4 points
8th favourite = 3 points
9th favourite = 2 points
10th favourite = 1 point

The criteria for this feature isn't too harsh, as long as the film has sci-fi elements in it (Superman; yes, it is centred on an alien crusader; Batman Begins, no as he has no specific powers) then it will be eligible for the feature. To get things rolling I include my favourite sci-fi films below, so you get the general idea of what we are looking for.

I hate chosing one...but if I could only watch one more film it would have to be Aliens

It is completely without fault (I dare you to find one...go on..I DARE you!!)

Smart guns, M41A Pulse Rifles, Alien queen, Hudson "have you ever been mistaken for a man?", Powerlifters, "get away from her you BITCH!", stomach bursters, face huggers, alien warriors by the bucketload, "pap pap" motion detectors (to make an appearance in COD6 of all places!), double-crossing-back-stabbing Company bastard, the finest "it's over, oh wait - no it isn't " ending ever, Bishop Vs Alien tail, nails dropship and APC, Ripley+flamethrower+Pulse Rifle should have = Oscar, "assholes and elbows", someone called Spunkmeyer (you said Spunk hahahaha) etc etc etc

The only thing missing, for me, is a scene in the novel where Ripley comes across Burke all slimed-up on her way to find Newt, and gives him a grenade to end it before Mr Chesty comes out to play. Other than that - PERFECT

I wish we could do one of these polls without Star Trek and Star Wars. They make an appearance in virtually everyone's lists, but it'd be an interesting thing to see who'd come out on top without the "big hitters" who win virtually every "top sci-fi" thing. Blade Runner? Alien? Flash Gordon? The Terminator?

In a spooky, twilight zone moment I was about to Facebook Captain Dallas to find out why his beardy presence has be so light on the forum...and I when I refresh the page, I find him lurking....

This list was selected based on the films I consistently enjoy and derive pleasure from, and which have made a lasting impression on me over the years, and most importantly, the films which I simply revel in watching again and again.

Regardless of what some may think of the quality (technical, artistic, whatever) of some of them, here's my list.


1) Star Wars: A New Hope
2) Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
3) Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
4) Superman The Movie
5) Mad Max 2 (yes, despite its lack of any actual "pure" sci-fi elements as such, I included this based on its post-apocalyptic setting and because it remains one of my all time favourite films)
6) The Thing
7) Aliens
8 ) Planet of the Apes (1968)
9) Alien
10) Robocop

Honourable mentions go to Blade Runner, Star Trek II, The Black Hole, Escape from New York, Flash Gordon, Tron, Logan's Run, The Terminator, Terminator 2, Predator, Dune, The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Godzilla (1956), Forbidden Planet, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and a bunch of others.
