X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender has signed on to co-produce and star in a film adaptation of the best-selling videogame Assassin’s Creed. He will play the game’s hero Desmond Miles, a bartender who discovers his ancestors were trained assassins and is sent back in time to retrieve historical artefacts.

“Michael Fassbender was our first choice to play the franchise’s iconic hooded hero. Michael is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor,” said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures.

The game it’s based on has four sequels and plenty of spin-offs, so this could be the start of a franchise if it performs well at the box office. It’s still in the early stages, though, and they still need to land a writer and director.
