Following the movie’s impressive US debut in the face of critical scorn, M Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender has gone nuclear with international audiences as well. The Last Airbender had its best weekend internationally yet, according to Boxofficemojo.com, and it’s likely to pull in a few million more before its time is up.
Apparently, The Last Airbender has grossed $225 million worldwide against an estimated $150 million budget. Obviously, that doesn’t factor in the movie’s marketing costs, but even with this in mind it’s an impressive haul for a movie that has been slated by pretty much every review outlet under the sun, including us.
We gave it one star, by the way. The Last Airbender could go as high as $270 million by the end of its theatrical run. As with The Happening, it seems audiences don’t really mind if Shyamalan’s movies aren’t that good.

Could it be audiences enjoy this movie for what it is? Surprise surprise, critics aren’t always right. Like so many movies(or music for that matter) in the past that were hated by critics but built a cult following through the years, sometimes they need to grow. Everyone raves about Scarface nowadays but when it came out critics hated it. It’s all so relative.
Maybe watch Airbender in 15 years then… :)
Can critics be wrong? Certainly. Are they wrong this time? Hell no. Shyalamalan is a hack that has only made one great film in his entire career. This train wreck is no different. I imagine this did so well for the same reason Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did so well: purely because its based off of a well-known and popular brand.
I enjoyed the movie,Im not a fan of the Avatar series on TV(actually I never watched) so I saw it as a decent fantasy movie.
