Although the Eric Kripke era of the show has ended, there’s no sign that Supernatural is going anywhere. In The CW’s recently announced schedule, the show is being moved from its post-Vampire Diaries time slot on Thursdays to a post-Smallville slot on Friday nights.
This may not be the best outcome for the show. This season, Smallville has been hitting series lows on Friday nights, eroding as the television year has rolled along. The Vampire Diaries, on the other hand, is The CW’s biggest scripted drama, and Supernatural has reaped the benefits from being in such a time slot.
Those hoping for a seventh season of Supernatural, then, may want to temper their optimism. Rival networks have been preparing all-new Friday night fare, making it the night to win in some respects. Let’s hope the show can hold up.

While The Vampire Diaries is a good show, Supernatural is much, much better, and season five has been the best yet! When I first heard they were making a season six I had mixed feelings – after all, where can you take the series after the Apocolypse? But the show shouldn’t be reduced to the Friday night “Death” slot. It deserves a few more seasons whereas Smallville certainly doesn’t.
I think it should end at season 6. It was quite obvious from the style and resolution of the last episode of season 5 that it was intended to be the end, with small shots/scenes added in to undo the equilibrium.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the show and will miss it greatly when it’s gone, but I’d also hate to see it get stale, boring, and downright ridiculous like, say… SMALLVILLE.
I use to love watching smallville and supernatural on the same night, much better partner! Glad to see it back, i read its coming back as a mid season so it should do alright in ratings woop woop
I’m confused why the CW pushed Supernatural for another season, when it was supposed to be a six season show, only to dump it into Friday night nowhereville. It’s a waste of the talent of the show, and now instead of going out in a big bang like it deserved, Supernatural will fade out in a whimper.
